The word “community” gets thrown around a lot – but what does it really mean? What is a community? Creating community requires understanding community. 

A community is a group of people who share something in common. You can define a community by the shared attributes of the people in it and/or by the strength of the connections among them. You need a bunch of people who are alike in some way, who feel some sense of belonging or interpersonal connection.

To involve or mobilize individuals within the group, the strength of the connections is most important. Communities may be huge and diffuse, or niche and tightly connected. The key is to be specific about whom you seek.

A strong community needs a long-term commitment. Make sure you know what you’re getting into when you start something up, and how long you’re willing to commit to it. A short-term commitment can produce a weak community, but a stronger group needs time to grow.
