Becoming a foster parent is a big step – for you and the child. But before you decide to take in a foster child, be sure you’re in the process of mastering some necessary parenting skills.

To help you prepare, here’s some key skills needed to master foster family bonds:

  1. If you have your own children, you need to prepare them for life as a foster family. You may be prepared, but are they? Everyone needs to be on board with this decision because it will shift the natural flow of your home.

  2. Maintain your cool. Like all children, foster children may push limits, especially during times of stress like when they are first entering your home.

  3. Remember that you need to build an attachment with the foster child. Physical discipline undermines the bond that you are trying to make. Your foster child needs to feel safe and supported, so do your best to support the both physically and emotionally.

  4. It’s important to understand that they may come with their own grief, so it’s important to do your best to understand their process so that you may be better able to meet their needs.

Mastering foster family bonds is so important if you’re taking in a foster child. It takes commitment, compassion, generosity, and love, but making sure you master the best foster-parenting skills will help you, your family, and your foster child thrive in the adventurous journey ahead.

You Don’t Have To Do It Alone.
