Taking the role of a mentor can seem like big shoes to fill. You’re becoming the person that a child or adolescent looks up to. But they need to become more independent, and someone has to do it.
So why not you?
There are many ways to go about mentoring youth to become independent
- Offer encouragement during challenging times – Growing up isn’t always the easiest. But don’t just do the difficult tasks for them. Encourage them during the tough times and help them through it. This will help them become more independent.
- Provides personal development tips – Guide them with advice that will help them become more independent, such as: Healthy habits to adopt.
- Share knowledge and life experiences – We all started somewhere. Tell them about your experiences and how you overcame the challenges you faced.
- Discusses goal setting and aspirations – Find out what they hope to achieve and assist them with setting short and long-term goals.
- Give them more tasks – Perhaps a little more than they can initially handle. This will teach them time management and will get them used to dealing with an overload of work, because as we know, being an adult requires that skill!
-
It may not seem like you have the ability to be someone’s mentor, but you do. Just being an adult knowing the things you know can help the youth become more independent.
Share your knowledge and help them grow into the independent adults they need to be.
